Gasoline and diesel mix — they don't separate. Both fuels are petroleum hydrocarbons, and hydrocarbons of similar type blend together at any ratio, just like adding cream to coffee. That's actually the problem. Once gasoline gets into a diesel tank, there's no settling it out or skimming it off.
This matters more than most owners realize. A splash of gas from the wrong pump nozzle can dilute diesel's lubricity and ignition quality enough to damage a fuel injection pump. Fleet managers, RV owners, and anyone who's ever grabbed the wrong hose at a truck stop needs to know how these two fuels actually behave once they're in the same tank.

Do Gasoline and Diesel Mix, or Separate Like Oil and Water?
They mix. Diesel and water separate because water is polar and diesel is nonpolar — they're chemically incompatible, so water sinks to the bottom of the tank. Gasoline and diesel are both nonpolar hydrocarbons refined from crude oil, so they dissolve into each other completely.
Once combined, there's no visible line between the two fuels. You can't drain off the gasoline layer, because there isn't one. The blend behaves as a single, uniform fuel with worse properties than either original fuel on its own.

Why Mixing Gas Into Diesel Causes Real Damage
Diesel and gasoline are built for opposite jobs. Diesel engines compress fuel until it self-ignites from heat; gasoline engines need a spark plug because gasoline resists compression ignition. Mixing them creates a fuel that does neither job well.
Cetane Dilution
Diesel's cetane rating (usually 40-55) measures how easily it self-ignites under compression. Gasoline has essentially no cetane rating and actually resists compression ignition. Add gasoline to diesel, and you lower the blend's cetane number, which delays ignition timing and can cause knock, rough idle, and lost power.
Lubricity Loss
Diesel fuel carries natural lubricating properties that protect the tight-tolerance parts inside high-pressure injection pumps — the CP3 and CP4 pumps found on Cummins, Power Stroke, and Duramax platforms. Gasoline acts more like a solvent than a lubricant. It strips that film away, and metal-on-metal contact inside the pump follows.
That's the real risk with a gas-diesel mix-up: not fire, not stalling, but a pump that wears out fast and can send metal debris through the entire fuel system.
Lower Flash Point
Diesel has a flash point of roughly 126-205°F, while gasoline's flash point is around -45°F. How Much Gasoline in Diesel Is Too Much?
There's no universal safe percentage published by engine makers, because injection pump tolerance varies by platform and fuel system design. But field experience across diesel repair shops points to a few practical thresholds:
- Under 1% (a cup of gas splashed into a mostly full tank): Usually tolerated without immediate damage, though it's not something to repeat.
- 1-5% (a gallon or two in a half-full pickup tank): Risky for CP3/CP4 pumps over time; most techs recommend draining and flushing rather than running it.
- Over 5% or any amount in a nearly empty tank: Drain the tank before starting the engine. The concentration is high enough to cause pump wear on the first startup.
Decision Framework
If you're not sure how much gas made it into the diesel tank, don't guess. If the fuel gauge was near full when the wrong nozzle went in, dilution is likely mild — top off with diesel and watch for rough running. If the tank was low or you're unsure of the amount, drain it before you turn the key. A diagnosis at a shop beats a guess every time.
What If You've Already Started the Engine?
Shut it off as soon as you realize the mistake. Running the engine circulates the contaminated fuel through the injection pump and injectors, which is exactly where the damage happens.
- Turn off the engine immediately — don't restart it, even to move the vehicle out of traffic. If you're blocking a lane, shift into neutral and push the vehicle clear, or wait for a tow, rather than firing the engine for even a few seconds.
- Have the vehicle towed to a shop rather than driven, even for a short distance. Every additional minute of running time pushes contaminated fuel further into the high-pressure side of the fuel system, where a repair gets more expensive.
- Get the tank drained and the fuel lines flushed before anyone attempts a restart. Most shops also replace the fuel filter as a matter of course, since it's the cheapest part in the system and the first thing exposed to a wave of gasoline-diluted fuel.
- Ask the shop to check fuel rail pressure against the commanded value on the first cold start after the flush, and to listen for pump whine or rattle. A pump that sounds off on restart is the earliest sign that wear happened before the drain caught it.
What a Shop Checks First
When a vehicle comes in for suspected gas-in-diesel contamination, a technician doesn't start by draining the tank blind. The diagnostic sequence usually runs in this order:
- Fuel sample test — a small sample is pulled from the tank and checked for smell and clarity. Gasoline-diluted diesel typically has a noticeably lighter, sharper odor than straight diesel.
- Fuel filter inspection — the filter is pulled and examined for metal shavings, which indicate pump wear already in progress rather than just contaminated fuel sitting in the tank.
- Fuel rail pressure log — a scan tool is connected to compare actual rail pressure against commanded pressure. A pump that's losing lubrication shows up here as unstable or lagging pressure before it fails outright.
- Injector bench test — if pump wear is confirmed, injectors are pulled and tested separately, since metal debris that damages a pump commonly travels downstream and scores the injectors too.
Only after these checks does the shop decide whether a straightforward drain-and-flush will do, or whether the pump and injectors need to come out.
What Draining and Flushing Actually Costs
Cost scales almost entirely with how long the contaminated fuel was allowed to run through the system before it got caught. The following ranges reflect typical shop labor and parts for each scenario:

If an estimate lands in the first two rows, most owners treat it as a routine, if annoying, repair bill.
